Whitley Heights

Argyle Design · Los Angeles, CA

Whitley Heights by Argyle Design

This living space, designed by Kat Bell and James Drew of Argyle Design for their own Los Angeles residence, pairs Mediterranean Revival architectural bones with iconic 20th-century vintage furnishings. An Alessandro Becchi Anfibio convertible sofa in rich tan leather for Giovannetti (1970s) anchors the room alongside a striking pair of Pierre Paulin Ribbon chairs (Model F582) for Artifort (1966). A heavily carved mid-century tiled coffee table serves as a tactile focal point against textured plaster walls and exposed dark wood beams. Contemporary touches like the Isamu Noguchi Akari Floor Lamp BB3-33S and a graphic hooked-yarn tapestry by artist Hannah Epstein round out the layered, collector-driven aesthetic.

Framed by a Mediterranean plaster archway, this vignette showcases a post-modern console table by Ettore Sottsass crafted from stacked marble, mahogany and lacquered wood geometric blocks. Above it hangs a vintage wrought-iron mirror bordered by minimalist stylised figurines, bridging bold Memphis-inspired postmodernism with primitive folk art.
Sculptural touches include a striped Gaetano Pesce Up 5 & 6 armchair and matching ottoman, a classic Panton Panthella floor lamp and a woven rattan side table, while a grid of framed black-and-white photographs adds a graphic element to the space.

This sunlit space pairs warm Mediterranean architectural notes with iconic vintage and contemporary design. Anchoring the room is an expansive, channel-tufted De Sede DS-600 "Non-Stop" modular sofa in cognac leather, wrapping beneath the original exposed ceiling beams. At the centre, a low glass-topped brass coffee table reflects the light from the steel casement windows. A white Eero Saarinen Tulip side table for Knoll sits nearby, with a bouclé stool and a pair of low ottomans by Oscar Niemeyer. An Isamu Noguchi Akari lantern completes a rich, curatorial room grounded in timeless design.

Defined by Italian post-modernism, the dining room centres on Angelo Mangiarotti's 1970s Eros marble dining table. A set of vintage French dining chairs, reupholstered in Dedar's Tiger Mountain, contrasts with the heavy stone base, beneath a vintage brass-and-crystal palm frond chandelier.
A sunlit seating nook built on space-age curves: an Olivier Mourgue Djinn sofa for Airborne in cream bouclé, Anna Castelli Ferrieri's Kartell Componibili unit, a turned-wood stool and a wall of vintage woven Tonga baskets.
